Victor H. Hasson
2011-Present Consulting on EO systems: 3 US companies, US Air Force, US Navy and University of Arizona. I worked mainly on Ultra-Short-Pulsed-Laser (USPL) development of high-power LWIR laser and amplifier sources and diverse USPL applications relating to filament formation, discharge guiding, long-range beam propagation, materials interaction, microwave generation, long-range communications through fog and associated fog clearing.
2006-11 Employed by Apogen Technologies (now QNA, TSG). Principal optical scientist working on various advanced multi-GHz electro-optical components and state-of –the-art communications concepts—underwater and terrestrial. Development of high-power THz sources.
2003 -2005 Trex Enterprises. Group Manager. Marketing and technical work on laser radar and optical trackers for various DoD agencies.
1979-2003 AVCO / Textron. Proposal leader, program manager and technical lead for high power CO2 gas laser development. Facilities manager for weapons-related testing programs. Director/program manager / technical -lead / business development on laser development, laser radar, imaging and remote sensing programs. Led the development of long-range laser radar and helped establish Textron as the world leader in this field. Leadership role in winning several major competitive DoD contracts > $120M. Proposal leader and managed a $28M laser radar component development program from 1986-91. Managed and completed (1997) a follow-on $42M long-range laser radar / imaging / DIAL system at the Maui Space Surveillance Site (MSSS) as prime contractor. Obtained two major multi-year follow-on programs: an advanced airborne long-range laser radar / imager and a second generation laser radar / imaging system coupled to the USAF 3.7 meter AEOS telescope at MSSS (total value $50M).
1972-1979 Council Scientific and Industrial Research (RSA). Development of gas and solid-state lasers and development of new electric discharge high -speed switching techniques
EDUCATION BSc (Elec. Eng) 1963 and MSc (Nuclear Physics) 1965 at Cape Town University, South Africa. PhD (Spectroscopy) 1970 at York University, Canada.
Post-Doc 1970-1 at York. Senior -Post-Doc (NSF) Fellowship1975-6.at NASA-Ames, California.
TEACHING AND MENTORING
Served as thesis advisor to MS and PhD students in 70’s at Pretoria and Natal Universities in South Africa and served as adjunct professor in 80’s at Northeaster University, Boston.
Appointed in 2005 as an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona, Tucson
Taught post-graduate evening courses for credit on lasers, laser engineering,
Optical properties of materials and laser radars/remote sensing.
Taught intensive laser radar/remote sensing short-courses abroad.
PUBLICATIONS AND PATENTS
Authored or co-authored combined total of over 150 refereed publications, conference papers and patents in diverse disciplines which included a wide variety of low and high power laser systems and excitation concepts, active and passive tracking concepts, long-range chemical detection, optical amplifiers and correlators and a variety of novel optical detection concepts.
Presented contributed and invited (session and plenary) papers covering several of these subjects at national, international and classified specialty conferences in the United States and abroad. Presented and/or co-authored invited papers on gas lasers, solid-state lasers, laser radars and laser propulsion at international conferences.
Served on several international conference committees, helped organize sessions and served as session chairperson/co-chairperson. Appointed to Laser Ablation International Conference Committee in 2003.
